Position: Kitchen Assistant

PLACE OF WORK: St Joseph’s School

 

REPORTS TO: School Business Manager

 

 

1.

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB

To assist in the heating and service of hot meals to school children, ensuring that the highest standards of hygiene and cleanliness are always maintained.

2.

KEY TASKS

 

 

  1.  

Clearing and washing crockery, utensils and catering equipment and ensuring safe and hygienic storage when not in use

 

  1.  

Assisting in the preparation of the kitchen area to ensure safe and hygienic service heating, storage and preparation of heat and serve meals

 

  1.  

Ensuring that standards of hygiene and safety are maintained in the storage, handling and preparation of meals and associated products.

 

  1.  

Ensuring the standards of hygiene and safety are maintained in the storage, cleaning and use of utensils and kitchen equipment with a clear focus on maintaining a safe service and eating environment for children.

 

  1.  

Setting and clearing tables and chairs in the school hall for service of food to children.

 

  1.  

Carry out routine and periodic cleaning and kitchen equipment and serving areas to ensure that a hygienic and safe environment is maintained.  Report any faulty or dangerous equipment.

 

  1.  

Monitor and maintain food temperature routines by ensuring that checks on refrigeration and heating equipment are carried out as part of standard routines and through monitoring during use.

 

  1.  

Wipe down and clean service areas, tables and chairs after use to ensure they are ready for future use

 

  1.  

Complete ad-hoc cleaning of spillages and other food related accidents as they happen in order to maintain a safe and hygienic environment. 

 

  1.  

Take in goods and equipment deliveries and check off consignments as they arrive, flagging any damage, concerns and shortfalls at the earliest opportunity. 

 

  1.  

Ensure that deliveries are held in appropriate temperature storage areas on arrival and when moving or counting stock.  Ensure temperature routines are maintained. 

 

  1.  

To report any safeguarding concerns using the appropriate school procedure.

 

  1.  

To place orders for school and nursery

 

  1.  

To cover breakfast club 7.30am – 8.30am

 

 

 

 

Comply with all school policies and procedures.

 

 

 

To co-operate in any staff development activities required to effectively carry out the duties of the post and to participate in the school appraisal process.

 

 

 

Any other reasonable duties commensurate with the level of the post.

 

4.

MAIN CONTACTS AND RELATIONSHIPS

Internal: Staff and children

 

External: Food standards agency or local authority enforcement officers, delivery service personnel, suppliers and external repair and maintenance contractors. 

 

5.

SPECIFIC AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Kitchen preparation and food storage areas.  Service area and tables / chairs etc.  Some external responsibility while receiving deliveries.

Hours and Salary

Term Time Monday – Friday 7.30am – 2.00pm

School Holidays Monday – Friday 9.15am – 12.45pm

Salary £17,435.20

7.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND QUALIFICATIONS

 

Essential, i.e. the post holder must have:

 

  • Willing to complete a Level 2 basic food hygiene certificate
  • Knowledge of safeguarding

 

Desirable, i.e. the post holder would ideally have:

 

  • Experience of working with children and young people.
  • Level 2 basic food hygiene certificate
  • Basic first aid

 

8.

EXPERIENCE

 

Essential, i.e. the post holder must have:

  • Catering and food preparation and service

 

Desirable, i.e. the post holder would ideally have:

  • Customer service skills

 

9.
