Chestnuts (year 1 & year 2)

Our Learning

In Maths this summer term, we will be learning about fractions, statistics and time before moving onto position and direction.

English- In Summer 1, we will be focusing on African folk tales based on animals. The children will be retelling the story of Anansi and the moss-covered rock and then innovating it, changing the characters that Anansi meets. In Summer 2, the children we will be writing a newspaper report linked to our history unit focusing on Robin Hood, deciding whether he was an outlaw or a hero. The children will continue to learn phonics and spelling rules on a weekly basis.

Topic- Our focus will be history this term and we will be learning about significant historical events and places in the locality. We will be looking at how the following have changed over time- Nottingham, Nottingham castle and Sherwood forest. We also will be learning about Robin Hood and comparing the Medieval time period to now.

Art- the children will be learning about animals in art, which ties in with our work in English.

Science- In Summer 1, our area of focus will be Plants. The children will be learning to identify different types of trees and flowers as well as focusing on the scientific skill of observation. In Summer 2 we will continuing our work on learning about plants and we will we will be carrying out an investigation, looking at conditions which affect plant growth.

PSHE- We will be following the Jigsaw scheme of work, focusing on dreams and goals, and being healthy.

RE- The children will be learning about Judaism this term. 

PE Details

PE days for Chestnuts are Monday and Wednesday.

Homework details

Each week, the children will receive a maths activity linked to our current learning, reading and spellings. Further information can be found on our Chestnuts Class Dojo page. 

Enrichment Opportunities

Each week the children have the opportunity to read with Breeze the labradoodle, as well as being able to attend a weekly dance and drama club, recorder group, German club and participate in weekly activities in their school houses. They also receive specialist French, art and music lessons.
